Hanafuda Koi-Koi Score Calculator | Tap the Cards You Captured to Score Every Yaku in Mon, With Cards-to-Go Hints, a 12-Month Score Sheet and a Full Yaku List

The Hanafuda Koi-Koi Score Calculator answers “how many mon is this hand worth?”, “how many cards until Boar-Deer-Butterfly?” and “what is the 12-month total?”. All 48 cards are laid out by month; tap the cards you and your opponent captured and it shows each yaku and the total in mon: Five Brights (10), Four Brights (8), Rainy Four Brights (7), Three Brights (5), Boar-Deer-Butterfly (5), Red Ribbons and Blue Ribbons (5 each, 10 for both), Flower-Viewing and Moon-Viewing Sake (5), Tane (5 animal cards for 1 mon), Tan (5 ribbons for 1 mon) and Kasu (10 plain cards for 1 mon). It handles the double for a total of 7 mon or more, the double for winning after your opponent called koi-koi, and the dealt-hand yaku Teshi and Kuttsuki. House rules can be switched: the value of the sake yaku (5, 3 or none), rain and fog cancellation, and whether the Sake Cup also counts as a plain card. It shows how many more cards each yaku needs, leaving out cards your opponent has taken, and keeps a January-to-December score sheet with totals. Includes a yaku list, a month-by-month list of all 48 cards (brights, animals, ribbons, plain) and a glossary.

Great for

  • Working out at once how many mon your captured cards are worth when you stop
  • Deciding whether to call koi-koi by seeing how many cards Boar-Deer-Butterfly, the Ribbons or Three Brights still need
  • Keeping score for a 12-month game with family or friends without paper
  • Looking up the points for the sake yaku or Rainy Four Brights in the yaku list
  • Learning the 48 hanafuda cards by month (brights, animals, ribbons, plain)
  • Comparing an app's or a video game's scoring with your house rules

Good to know

  • The points follow widely used Koi-Koi rules: Five Brights 10 mon, Four Brights 8, Rainy Four Brights 7, Three Brights 5; Boar-Deer-Butterfly, Red Ribbons, Blue Ribbons, Flower-Viewing Sake and Moon-Viewing Sake 5 each; Red and Blue Ribbons together 10; Tane (5 animal cards) and Tan (5 ribbons) 1 mon plus 1 for each extra card; Kasu (10 plain cards) 1 mon plus 1 for each extra card.
  • Only the highest bright yaku counts; other yaku are added together. For example, Three Brights (5), Flower-Viewing Sake (5) and Moon-Viewing Sake (5) make 15 mon, doubled to 30 because it is 7 or more, and 60 (four times) if you won after your opponent's koi-koi.
  • Three brights including Ono no Michikaze (the rain man of the willow) make no yaku. Four brights including him are Rainy Four Brights, 7 mon, doubled to 14 because it is 7 or more.
  • By default the Sake Cup counts both as an animal card and as a plain card. The value of the sake yaku (5, 3 or no yaku), rain and fog cancellation, the rule adding 1 mon per extra card to Boar-Deer-Butterfly and the Ribbons, and the double for 7 or more can all be switched in the settings.
  • The cards-to-go hints treat cards your opponent has captured as unavailable. They do not distinguish cards on the table, in the draw pile or in your opponent's hand.

FAQ

How many points is each Koi-Koi yaku worth?
Five Brights 10 mon, Four Brights 8, Rainy Four Brights 7, Three Brights 5, Boar-Deer-Butterfly 5, Red Ribbons 5, Blue Ribbons 5 (10 for both), Flower-Viewing Sake 5, Moon-Viewing Sake 5, Tane (5 animal cards) 1, Tan (5 ribbons) 1 and Kasu (10 plain cards) 1. Tane, Tan and Kasu gain 1 mon for each extra card. The dealt-hand yaku Teshi and Kuttsuki are worth 6.
What does “double for 7 mon or more” mean?
If the total of your yaku is 7 mon or more when you stop, the score is doubled. Boar-Deer-Butterfly (5) plus Tane (1 for 5 animal cards) is 6 and stays 6; Three Brights plus both sake yaku is 15 and becomes 30.
How much is a koi-koi return worth?
Winning after your opponent called koi-koi is usually doubled. Combined with the double for 7 or more, it becomes four times. Boar-Deer-Butterfly and Tane (6 mon) become 12 mon.
What is the difference between Rainy Four Brights and Three Brights?
Three Brights is three brights other than Ono no Michikaze (rain), worth 5 mon; three including the rain card make no yaku. Four brights are Rainy Four Brights (7) if they include the rain card and Four Brights (8) if not, and all five are Five Brights (10).
What are rain and fog cancellation?
They are regional rules: once Ono no Michikaze (rain) or the Phoenix of the paulownia (fog) has been captured, the Flower-Viewing and Moon-Viewing Sake yaku no longer count. You can turn them on in the settings; they apply whichever player captured the card.
Does the Sake Cup count as a plain card?
In many rules the Chrysanthemum with Sake Cup counts both as an animal card and as a plain card. The tool does this by default, so 9 plain cards plus the Sake Cup make Kasu (1 mon). You can switch it to count only as an animal card.
