Japanese Cipher Puzzle Maker | Encode, Decode and Share Puzzles
Encode or decode Japanese text with pager, mobile keypad, JIS keyboard, kana shift, number, and tanuki ciphers. Guess unknown ciphers and share answer-checking puzzle URLs or PNG cards.
Create or solve a cipher
Choose a method and enter text. Hiragana, katakana, Latin letters, and numbers are supported (convert kanji to kana first).
Pager cipher
Turn the kana row and column into a two-digit number (く, third in the K row, = 23). Latin letters and digits can also be encoded as two digits.
Example: あいしてる → 11 12 32 44 93
Cipher
Pager cipher table
| Row / column | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | 0 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | あ | い | う | え | お | A | B | C | D | E |
| 2 | か | き | く | け | こ | F | G | H | I | J |
Enter the row digit first, then the column digit (す = third character in the S row = 33; B = 17). Add 04 for dakuten or 05 for handakuten (が = 21 04). The long-vowel mark ー uses the same code as a hyphen, 69. Symbols in columns 6–0 of rows 7 and 8 vary by device, so they are omitted.
Solve an unknown cipher
Enter numbers, Latin letters, or kana and the tool tries pager, mobile keypad, keyboard, kana shift, number, and tanuki methods, ranking likely readings.
Short ciphers are more speculative. Compare several candidates.
Create a puzzle
Enter a cipher, hint, and answer to create an answer-checking URL and a 1200 × 675 image for social media. The answer itself is not included in the URL.

Answers are normalized to hiragana with spaces and punctuation removed before checking. The URL contains only a hash derived from the answer, but short answers can be brute-forced, so do not use this for prize-critical puzzles.

About Japanese Cipher Puzzle Maker | Encode, Decode and Share Puzzles
Make or solve Japanese cipher puzzles using six methods: pager row-and-column numbers, mobile keypad presses, JIS kana keyboard keys, kana Caesar shifts (plus ROT13), kana or A1Z26 numbers, and tanuki letter-removal codes. Each method includes a reference table. Try all methods to guess an unknown cipher, then share a quiz URL with answer checking or download a PNG question card.
