About Reading Time & Speech Time Calculator
The Reading Time & Speech Time Calculator converts between text length and time in either direction. Paste your text or enter a count to see the time for careful reading, normal silent reading, skimming, and reading aloud, plus the time when listening at higher speed. Or start from your time slot: with speaking speeds for situations such as wedding speeches or internal presentations, it shows the target script length, manuscript pages, and number of slides.
How to use Reading Time & Speech Time Calculator
- 1Paste your text into the “Length → time” tab (or enter the count directly if you know it)
- 2For documents with many figures, enter the number of figures to add viewing time
- 3Read off the time for silent reading, reading aloud, and faster playback (a “reading time” label for articles is shown too)
- 4To write a presentation script, switch to the “Time → length” tab and enter your time slot
- 5Choose the speaking situation to see the maximum and target script length at that speed, plus a breakdown of your time
Great for
- Get the number for a “X min read” label on a blog or internal document
- Check after writing that a 3- or 5-minute speech fits the time
- Decide the script length and number of slides from a presentation’s time slot
- Estimate the length of a video narration from the script
- Compare reading documents aloud in a meeting versus having everyone read them
- Check in advance that training or class material fits the allotted time
Good to know
- For Japanese, silent reading is typically 400–600 characters per minute and reading aloud around 300. This tool uses 500 characters/min for normal silent reading and 300 for reading aloud.
- Switch to English to count space-separated words, at 225 words/min for silent reading and 140 words/min for reading aloud.
- Time estimates use the count without line breaks and spaces. Scripts contain many line breaks, so counts including spaces overstate what is actually read.
- Figures take time to look at rather than read, so 15 seconds is added per figure.
- If you spend your whole slot speaking, you will run over. By default 70% of the slot is used for the script, and the rest goes to pauses, slide changes, and Q&A.
- The script target is 90% of the maximum. People speak faster when nervous, so it is safer to write a little less.
- Reading and speaking speeds vary a lot between people, so entering your own measured one-minute speed under “Your speed” improves accuracy.
- Pasted text is processed in your browser and is never included on a server or in the share URL.

FAQ
- How many characters can you read per minute?
- For Japanese, silent reading is roughly 400–600 characters per minute. Careful reading of contracts or specs is around 300 per minute, and skimming headings and conclusions can exceed 800. Text with many technical terms or numbers is slower, and the same person varies with screen size and tiredness, so use it as a range. For English, about 200–250 words per minute is typical.
- How much can you say in one minute?
- Public speaking runs at about 300 Japanese characters per minute — about the pace of a news reader, which listeners can follow. Occasions with long pauses, like wedding speeches, use about 250 per minute, and video narration that can be tightened in editing can go up to about 330. A 3-minute speech is about 900 characters at the standard pace. In English, speaking runs about 130–150 words per minute.
- How long should a script for a 5-minute presentation be?
- Speaking for all 5 minutes would be 1,500 Japanese characters, but pauses and slide changes mean about 3.5 minutes of speech — around 1,000 characters — is realistic. Choose 5 minutes and “Internal presentation” and turn on “Subtract time for pauses, slide changes, and Q&A” to do this calculation. The “script target” shown is another 10% less.
- What speed should I use for an article’s reading time?
- It is common to fix one speed for the whole site, often 400 or 500 characters per minute for Japanese (around 200–250 words per minute for English). Round up, and show “1 min” even for less than a minute. Changing the speed per article stops readers comparing lengths. For articles with many figures, adding 10–20 seconds per figure keeps the estimate closer to reality.
- How much longer does reading aloud take than silent reading?
- The same text takes longer to hear than to read. 3,000 Japanese characters take about 6 minutes to read silently (500/min) and about 10 minutes read aloud (300/min). That is why meetings where documents are read aloud run long; handing them out to read is quicker. Listening at higher speed brings it close to silent reading — at 1.5× it is about 6 minutes 40 seconds.
- Can I use it for English speeches and articles?
- Yes. Switch the unit to “English (words)” to count space-separated words. English reading speed is about 200–250 words per minute and speaking about 130–150; this tool uses 225 and 140 words per minute respectively. Words and Japanese characters are different units, so they can’t be compared directly.
