Vertical Text Converter | Turn Horizontal Text into Copy-and-Paste Vertical Text for X, LINE and Instagram, with Vertical Punctuation, PNG Export and Back to Horizontal
The Vertical Text Converter answers questions such as “how do I post vertical text on X?”, “why does the long dash stay horizontal?” and “how do I read a vertical post as normal text?”. It rearranges your text one character per line into columns read from right to left. Half-width letters and numbers become full-width so every line has the same width, and dashes, brackets and punctuation are replaced with Unicode vertical forms (| ﹁﹂ ﹃﹄ ︵︶ ︻︼ ︑︒ ≀ ︙) so they still read correctly. It wraps at a set number of characters per column, keeps punctuation and closing brackets off the top of a column, and lets you separate columns with a full-width space, a vertical bar or nothing. It also shows the X character count (full-width counts as 2, limit 280). Other tabs make a vertical PNG image in a serif or sans-serif font, turn vertical text back into horizontal text and list the vertical punctuation characters with their code points. Everything runs in your browser and your text is never sent anywhere.

Good to know
- Vertical text is built by placing columns from right to left and reading across: line 1 holds the first character of each column, line 2 the second, and so on. Short columns are padded with full-width spaces and letters and symbols are made full-width, so every line has the same width.
- A long dash would look like a horizontal bar inside vertical text, so it becomes “|”, a wave dash becomes “≀” and an ellipsis becomes “︙”. Corner brackets, parentheses and other brackets become Unicode vertical forms (﹁﹂﹃﹄︵︶︻︼︿﹀︽︾), and the ideographic comma and full stop become “︑︒”, which sit in the upper right. Turn off “Vertical punctuation” if you don’t want these replacements.
- Setting the characters per column wraps the text into the next column at that length. With line-breaking rules on, punctuation, closing brackets, small kana and long dashes are kept off the top of a column by moving the previous character to the next column as well.
- X counts CJK characters and full-width symbols as 2 and half-width letters, numbers and line breaks as 1, and a single post can be up to 280. Vertical text adds full-width padding and line breaks, so it is longer than the horizontal text. Choosing “None” between columns makes it shorter.
- Depending on the font where you paste, letters, symbols and emoji may be a different width from CJK characters, so columns can look crooked. Writing numbers as kanji numerals (二〇二六) helps keep them straight.
- When turning text back to horizontal, columns are read from the right, and a column that doesn’t reach the bottom is treated as the end of a paragraph. Columns that are only 1-2 characters short because of the line-breaking rules are joined. A paragraph that ends exactly at the column length is joined with the next one.

FAQ
- How do I make a vertical post on X (Twitter)?
- Enter your text, press “Copy vertical text” and paste it into the X post box. “Post to X” opens the post screen with the vertical text already filled in. The two-line sample “Stay hungry,” and “stay foolish.” becomes 2 columns × 13 lines.
- Why does the long dash stay horizontal in vertical text?
- Social media posts simply stack horizontal characters, so a long dash is still shown as a horizontal bar. This tool replaces it with “|” (a full-width vertical bar), and also replaces corner brackets, parentheses and the ideographic comma and full stop with the vertical ﹁﹂︵︶︑︒.
- How long can vertical text be on X?
- X allows up to 280, counting full-width characters as 2 and half-width characters and line breaks as 1. Vertical text adds full-width padding and line breaks, so even the 2 columns × 13 lines sample counts as 90. Choosing “None” between columns makes it shorter.
- What happens to numbers and English letters?
- Half-width letters and numbers are made full-width and stacked one per line. Writing numbers as “Kanji numerals (二〇二六)” reads more naturally in vertical text. You can also keep them half-width, but then the widths don’t match and columns tend to shift.
- Can I turn vertical text into an image?
- Yes. In the “Vertical image” tab, choose a serif or sans-serif font, a white, washi paper, night sky or blackboard colour scheme, the text size and an optional manuscript-paper grid, then save it as a PNG. In the image, dashes and brackets are rotated 90 degrees and punctuation and small kana are moved to the upper right, close to printed vertical text.
- Can I turn a vertical post back into horizontal text?
- Paste the vertical text into the “Back to horizontal” tab and it is read from the right-hand column into horizontal text. Choose the separator between columns (full-width space, vertical bar or none) and the column order to match the original.
