About Japan Consumption Tax & Service Charge Calculator (Tax-Inclusive ⇄ Tax-Exclusive)
The Japan Consumption Tax & Service Charge Calculator converts prices in either direction between tax-exclusive and tax-inclusive, and builds up a restaurant bill with a service charge step by step. Switch between the 10% standard rate and the 8% reduced rate, and round fractions of a yen down, up, or to the nearest. The service charge tab shows the breakdown of food, table charge, service charge, and consumption tax, how many times the food price the total comes to, and how much to collect from each person.

Great for
- Find the tax-inclusive price you will actually pay from a tax-exclusive menu or quote
- Work out the pre-tax price and tax from a receipt’s total for an expense report
- Estimate a course plus all-you-can-drink total at a restaurant with a 10% service charge before booking
- When the bill feels higher than expected, check how the service charge and tax stack up
- As the organizer, work out the amount per person including the table charge
- Compare 8% takeout prices with 10% eat-in prices side by side
Good to know
- Service charge and consumption tax stack by multiplication, not addition. With a 10% service charge and 10% tax, you pay 1.21 times the pre-tax price.
- Businesses may choose how to round consumption tax below 1 yen. If you are off by 1 yen from a receipt, try a different rounding setting.
- If you enter tax-inclusive menu prices, they are converted back to tax-exclusive before the service charge is calculated.
- Whether the service charge applies to the table charge differs by restaurant, so you can toggle it with a checkbox.
- The 8% reduced rate applies to takeout and delivery; eating in is taxed at the standard 10%. The same item can fall into a different category.
- The per-person amount is rounded using your chosen rounding, so the amount collected can differ slightly from the actual bill. The difference is shown below the result.
- All calculations happen in your browser; the amounts you enter are never sent to a server.

FAQ
- How do I get the tax-exclusive price from a tax-inclusive one?
- Tax-exclusive price = tax-inclusive price ÷ 1.1 (÷ 1.08 for the reduced rate). The tax is the difference between the two. Dividing by 1.1 often leaves a fraction, so how you round it can change the result by 1 yen. This tool lets you choose the rounding and always keeps tax-exclusive + tax = tax-inclusive, whichever way you calculate.
- With a 10% service charge and 10% consumption tax, how much more do I pay in total?
- Not 20% more but 21% more. The service charge counts as part of the price, so consumption tax is charged on the amount including the service charge. A ¥10,000 pre-tax bill becomes ¥11,000 with service and ¥12,100 with 10% tax. At a 15% service charge it is 1.15 × 1.1 = 1.265, about 27% more.
- Are menu prices in Japan tax-inclusive or tax-exclusive?
- Consumer prices in Japan must in principle show the tax-inclusive total, so most menus today are tax-inclusive. Some restaurants note that “prices exclude tax”, though. When the bill still jumps, it is usually because a service charge is added separately. This tool lets you switch between tax-inclusive and tax-exclusive menu prices.
- Should consumption tax be rounded down or to the nearest yen?
- Either is fine. Businesses decide how to handle fractions below 1 yen, and rounding down, up, or to the nearest are all allowed. If your result is 1 yen off the receipt, the shop probably rounds differently — try switching the rounding in this tool.
- When does the 8% reduced rate apply?
- It applies to food and drink (excluding alcohol) bought for takeout or delivery, and to subscribed newspapers. The same item at the same shop is taxed at 10% if you eat in and 8% if you take it out. Bills that mix takeout cannot simply be added together, so calculate each tax-rate group shown on the receipt separately.
- Is the table charge (otoshi) charged per person?
- The otoshi appetizer is usually a fixed amount per person, and seat or cover charges are per person or per table. This tool adds “amount per person × number of people” to the total. Thinking of fixed items (otoshi) as split by headcount and percentage items (service charge) as tied to the food total makes it easier to explain the split.
