Moon Phase Calendar & the Moon on the Day You Were Born | Your Birthday Moon's Shape, Moon Age and Lunar Day with Traditional Japanese Moon Names, the Years Your Birthday Falls on a Full Moon, Full and New Moon Dates with Names like Strawberry Moon, Mid-Autumn Moon Dates, Supermoons and Blue Moons

The Moon Phase Calendar answers “What did the moon look like on the day I was born?” and “Will my next birthday be a full moon?”. Enter a date (and your time of birth if you know it) to see a drawing of that day's moon with its age, illumination (how much of the disc is lit), distance from Earth and lunar day, counting the day of the new moon as day 1. You also get the traditional Japanese name for that night's moon, such as Mikazuki (third-day crescent), Jūsan'ya (13th night), Izayoi (16th night, the hesitant moon) or Tachimachi-zuki (the moon you stand and wait for), with its meaning. For your 1st to 100th birthdays it lists the years your birthday falls on a full moon and the years the moon returns to the same shape as on your birth date (about every 19 years, the Metonic cycle). The moon phase calendar shows each day's shape and noon moon age for a month, with the times of new moon, first quarter, full moon and last quarter. The yearly list gives the date and time of every full moon with its name (Wolf Moon, Pink Moon, Strawberry Moon, Harvest Moon, Hunter's Moon and more), its distance, the biggest full moon of the year (supermoon) and the smallest, blue moons, and the Mid-Autumn (15th night), 13th night and 10th night moon-viewing dates, including how many days the 15th night is off from the full moon. You can choose a time zone (US, UK, Japan, Korea, China and more) and the Southern Hemisphere view, and save the moon as a PNG image.

Years your birthday is a full moon

Treating this date as a birthday, these are the 1st to 100th birthdays on which the full moon falls, and the years with the same lunar day as the birth date.

Your next full moon birthday is in 2037 (age 11)

Years with the same shape as your birth date (lunar day 14)

Moon phases return to almost the same dates every 19 years (the Metonic cycle: 235 lunar months ≈ 19 years), so your 19th, 38th, 57th… birthdays tend to have a moon much like the one on the day you were born.

Good to know

  • Moon age is the number of days since the moment of the new moon. If you don't enter a time, the calculator uses the moon age at noon on that day, as most calendars and almanacs do.
  • The lunar day counts the day of the new moon as day 1, the same way as the traditional East Asian lunar calendar. Traditional moon names such as the 3rd-day crescent, the 13th night and the 15th night come from this count. Moon age is a decimal and the lunar day is a whole number, so they can differ by 1 or 2.
  • Times of new moon, first quarter, full moon and last quarter come from astronomical formulas (Meeus, Astronomical Algorithms) and are accurate to within a minute. The date depends on the time zone you choose, so a full moon can fall on different dates in the US and in Asia.
  • The Mid-Autumn moon (the 15th night of the 8th lunar month, in the lunar month containing the September equinox) is not always exactly full. In 2026 it falls on September 25 in East Asia, while the full moon comes two days later.
  • There is no official definition of a supermoon. Here a full moon closer than 360,000 km counts as a supermoon as a rule of thumb, and the closest and farthest full moons of each year are marked.
  • Full moon names (Wolf Moon, Strawberry Moon and so on) are the month names popularised by the Farmer's Almanac. The Harvest Moon is the full moon closest to the September equinox, and a Blue Moon here is the second full moon in a calendar month.
  • For birthdays on February 29, non-leap years are counted as March 1.
  • Moonrise and moonset times depend on your exact location, so this tool does not show them.

FAQ

How do I find the moon phase on the day I was born?
Enter your birthday under “The moon on the day you were born”. The tool draws the moon as it looked at noon that day and shows its moon age, illumination, lunar day and name. For example, on January 1, 2000 (US Eastern time) the moon was 24.8 days old, on lunar day 26, a waning crescent with about 21% of the disc lit. Add your time of birth to get the moon age at that exact moment.
How often does a birthday fall on a full moon?
A full moon comes about every 29.5 days, so on average a birthday is a full moon roughly once every 30 years. Moon phases return to nearly the same calendar dates every 19 years (the Metonic cycle), so full moon birthdays often come 19 years apart. For someone born on January 1, 2000 in US Eastern time, the full moon birthdays are in 2018, 2037, 2048 and 2094.
What is the difference between moon age and the lunar day?
Moon age is the time since the moment of the new moon, a decimal such as 14.3 days. The lunar day is a whole number that counts the day of the new moon as day 1, as the traditional lunar calendar does. Traditional names such as the 13th night and the 15th night come from the lunar day, so a moon age of 15 does not always mean the 15th night.
Is the Harvest Moon or Mid-Autumn moon always full?
The Harvest Moon is by definition a full moon: the one closest to the September equinox. In 2026 it is on September 26 at 12:49 PM US Eastern time. The Mid-Autumn moon, the 15th night of the 8th lunar month, is often one or two days before the actual full moon, because the time from new moon to full moon varies from about 13.9 to 15.6 days.
When are the supermoon and blue moon in 2026?
In US Eastern time, the biggest full moon of 2026 is on December 23 at 8:28 PM, about 356,750 km away. The smallest is on May 31 at 4:45 AM, about 406,110 km away, which is also a Blue Moon as the second full moon in May. The Strawberry Moon is on June 29 at 7:57 PM.
What do the Japanese names Tachimachi-zuki and Ine-machi-zuki mean?
After the full moon, the moon rises about 50 minutes later each night, and in Japan the nights were named for how long you had to wait. The 16th night is Izayoi, the hesitant moon; the 17th is Tachimachi-zuki, the moon you wait for standing; the 18th is Imachi-zuki, sitting; the 19th is Nemachi-zuki, lying down; and the 20th is Fukemachi-zuki, the moon that rises late at night.
