Typing Speed Test (Characters per Minute)
Measure typing with a passage to copy or a free-writing prompt. See characters per minute, keystrokes per minute, WPM, accuracy and correction keys, compare your level with a reference table, estimate writing time, and keep recent records on your device.
Mode
Type from a sample. This mode also measures accuracy.
Duration
The timer starts with your first keystroke. If you stop early, the result uses the elapsed time.
Sample
Mostly hiragana and kanji. A good first passage to try.
Input
1 min 0 sec left
Records saved on this device
One result can vary with the passage. Test three different passages and use the average as your typical speed.

ABOUT
About Typing Speed Test (Characters per Minute)
This typing speed test measures how much you can type in a minute, right in your browser. Choose copy mode to type from a sample or free-writing mode to write about a prompt. Results include characters per minute, keystrokes per minute (KPM), WPM, accuracy and correction keys. Compare your result with five skill levels, estimate the time needed for a draft, and save up to 20 recent records on this device.

- 6Open Conversion & benchmarks to convert a practice-site score or estimate draft time.
Great for
- Check whether your typing speed is beginner, intermediate or work-ready.
- Estimate how long a report or article will take using your measured speed.
- Compare copy typing with free writing, which also includes thinking time.
- Convert a practice site's keystroke score or WPM into an approximate character rate.
- Measure progress by repeating the same test a month later.
- See how accuracy and corrections affect your copy-typing result.
- Measure English WPM with the English sample passage.
Good to know
- All measurement happens in your browser. Typed text is not sent to a server, and records stay in this browser on this device.
- Speed is based on the text left after corrections, so time spent fixing typos is included.
- Character rate excludes spaces and line breaks. WPM treats five characters, including spaces, as one word.
- Pasting is disabled so the measurement reflects text typed during the test.
- Some browsers and input methods do not report every keystroke during composition. Treat KPM and WPM as estimates if the tool shows a warning.
- The five benchmark levels use reference ranges, not an official standard.
- Copy-mode accuracy compares the typed text with the sample and accounts for missing, extra and mistyped characters.
- Accuracy is not shown in free-writing mode because there is no sample to compare against.
- Results are not shown for tests shorter than five seconds or with no entered text.

FAQ
- How many characters per minute is considered fast?
- For Japanese input, around 100 characters per minute while copying is a useful sign of fast typing. Around 60–90 characters per minute is a practical office range, while following meeting remarks for minutes often calls for about 100. This tool places results into five reference levels; they are guides, not official standards. Free writing is usually 20–30% slower because it includes thinking time.
- How do I measure my typing speed?
- Press Start and type as you normally would. The timer begins with your first keystroke and stops automatically. Try three different passages and use the average, since passage difficulty can affect one result. Records stay on this device, so you can repeat the same conditions later.
- How are WPM and Japanese characters converted?
- WPM counts five characters, including spaces, as one word. At 40 WPM that is about 200 keystrokes per minute. With romaji input, one kana takes roughly two keystrokes, so that is about 100 Japanese characters per minute. Conversion and corrections can make the actual rate lower.
- What is the difference between copy and free-writing modes?
- Copy mode measures how quickly you can type text you can see and also checks accuracy against the sample. Free-writing mode includes time spent thinking, so its rate is lower but can better reflect drafting work.
- Can I estimate how long a draft will take?
- Yes. Enter the number of characters in Conversion & benchmarks to see typing time at your measured rate. The estimate excludes planning and research time.
- Why are keystrokes missing or unusually low?
- Some browsers do not report each key pressed while an input method is composing text. If keystrokes are lower than characters, the tool displays a notice. Use characters per minute for comparison; the character count is based on the finished text.
- Is my text or record uploaded?
- No. Measurement and counting run in your browser. Only date, mode, speed and accuracy are stored in this device's browser; the text itself is not saved. Clear records at any time.
