ABOUT

About Unit Converter (Tsubo, Tatami, Inches, Pounds)

The unit converter converts across 10 categories (length, weight, area, volume, temperature, speed, data size, time, energy and power) just by entering a value and choosing a unit. It handles traditional Japanese shakkanho units such as tsubo, tatami (jo), shaku, ken, go, momme and kan alongside international units such as inches, pounds, ounces, Fahrenheit and gallons, all on one screen. Because the size of a tatami varies by region and building style, you can choose from Kyoma, Chukyoma, Edoma, Danchima, or the real estate advertising standard (1 tatami = 1.62 ㎡). Rather than a single answer, it lists conversions to every unit in the same category at once, plus a quick-reference table in steps of 1, 2, 3, 5, 10 … and the formulas the conversions are based on.

How to use Unit Converter (Tsubo, Tatami, Inches, Pounds)

  1. 1Choose the category you want to convert (length, weight, area, etc.) from the tabs
  2. 2Enter a value (full-width digits and numbers with commas can be pasted as they are)
  3. 3Choose the source and target units (common pairs such as “tsubo → ㎡” are one tap away)
  4. 4When using tatami for area, choose the “tatami standard” (for real estate ads, leave it at 1.62 ㎡)
  5. 5Copy the result (just the number, or the whole expression like “30 tsubo = 99.17 ㎡”)
  6. 6Check other units and stepped values in the “All units” and “Quick reference” tabs

Good to know

  • Shakkanho units are calculated using the values defined by Japan’s Measurement Act: 1 shaku = 10/33 m, 1 tsubo = 400/121 ㎡, 1 go = 2401/13310 L. These do not divide evenly, so results are rounded to the number of decimal places you specify.
  • The size of a tatami (jo) varies by region and building style. The default is 1 tatami = 1.62 ㎡, as used in real estate advertising. To learn the actual size of a room, switch to Kyoma, Chukyoma, Edoma or Danchima.
  • The “kin” of a loaf of bread is not the shakkanho kin (600 g). Fair competition rules require at least 340 g, and commercial loaves are around 340 to 400 g. The “kin” in this tool is calculated as the shakkanho 600 g.
  • Ounces are calculated as avoirdupois ounces (about 28.35 g). They are a different unit from the troy ounce (about 31.10 g) used for gold, silver and medicine.
  • Gallons are provided as separate units because a US gallon (about 3.785 L) and a UK gallon (about 4.546 L) differ in volume.
  • Cups are separated into the Japanese measuring cup (200 mL), the rice-cooker rice cup (180 mL) and the US cup (about 237 mL). Overseas recipes use the 237 mL one.
  • Volume and grams cannot be converted directly, because the same volume varies with the density of the contents. How many grams a tablespoon is differs by seasoning.
  • Data size separates GB and MB (powers of 1000) from GiB and MiB (powers of 1024). A 1 TB disk showing as about 931 GB on a computer comes from this difference in counting.
  • Pace in “minutes per km” is inversely proportional to speed. The smaller the number, the faster you are.
  • All calculations run in your browser, and the values you enter are never sent to a server.

FAQ

How many square meters is 1 tsubo?
1 tsubo = 400/121 ㎡, or about 3.3058 ㎡. Conversely, 1 ㎡ = 0.3025 tsubo, so to get tsubo from ㎡ you divide by 3.3 or multiply by 0.3025. A tsubo was originally the area of a square 1 ken (6 shaku, about 1.82 m) on each side, equal to two tatami mats. For example, 30 tsubo is about 99.17 ㎡, and 100 ㎡ is about 30.25 tsubo. For a rough mental calculation, “tsubo × 3.3 = ㎡” and “㎡ ÷ 3.3 = tsubo” give close enough values.
How many square meters is 6 tatami? Isn’t the size of a tatami fixed?
It is not fixed. There are about four kinds depending on region and building: Kyoma (about 1.824 ㎡), Chukyoma (about 1.656 ㎡), Edoma (about 1.549 ㎡) and Danchima (about 1.445 ㎡). For 6 tatami, Kyoma gives about 10.94 ㎡ and Edoma about 9.29 ㎡, a difference of more than 1.6 ㎡. However, fair competition rules require real estate ads to treat “1 tatami as at least 1.62 ㎡,” so the tatami counts on floor plans are written to that standard. This tool defaults to 1.62 ㎡, and you can switch to an actual tatami size under “Tatami standard.”
How many mL and grams is 1 go of rice?
1 go = 2401/13310 L, which is about 180.39 mL. The rice cup that comes with a rice cooker is 180 mL, so you can treat them as nearly the same amount. By weight, 1 go of uncooked white rice is about 150 g, and after cooking it absorbs water and becomes about 330 g. “X go of rice” in a cookbook refers to volume, so when weighing on a kitchen scale, use 1 go = 150 g as a guide. Note that measuring rice with a Japanese measuring cup (200 mL) gives more than 1 go.
How do I convert Fahrenheit to Celsius?
℃ = (℉ − 32) ÷ 1.8. For example, 100 ℉ is about 37.8 ℃, and 350 ℉ (a common oven temperature in overseas recipes) is about 176.7 ℃, so you would set a Japanese oven to 180 ℃. For a mental estimate, “subtract 32 and halve it” gives a rough value (68 ℉ → 18 ℃, actually 20 ℃). In the other direction, ℉ = ℃ × 1.8 + 32. Temperature is the one case where multiplication alone does not work, because the zero point differs between units.
How many cc is 1 tablespoon? How many grams?
1 tablespoon = 15 mL = 15 cc, which equals 3 teaspoons. 1 teaspoon is 5 mL. Grams, however, depend on the ingredient. For 1 tablespoon, water is 15 g, soy sauce about 18 g, sugar (granulated white) about 9 g, salt about 18 g, oil about 14 g and flour about 9 g. Volume and weight are linked by density, so there is no single answer for “a tablespoon is how many grams.” If a recipe is written in mL or cc, measuring directly with a measuring spoon is the most reliable.
I want to convert inches to centimeters.
1 inch is exactly 2.54 cm. It is an internationally defined value, so there are no extra decimals. A “32-inch” TV or monitor is measured along the screen diagonal, so 32 × 2.54 = about 81.3 cm. The waist size “W32” on trousers uses the same inches, about 81 cm. To go from cm to inches, divide by 2.54. For a mix such as “5 ft 8 in,” 1 foot = 12 inches = 30.48 cm, so 68 inches = about 172.7 cm.
I bought a 1 TB disk, but my computer shows 931 GB.
It is a difference in counting, and no capacity has been lost. Disk makers define 1 TB as 1 trillion bytes (1000 to the 4th power), while Windows and others count in steps of 1024 and label the result “GB.” Dividing 1 trillion bytes by 1024 cubed gives about 931, hence 931 GB (strictly, GiB). The “Data size” category of this tool lists GB and TB (powers of 1000) and GiB and TiB (powers of 1024) as separate units, so you can check which way of counting is being used.
How do I convert horsepower to kilowatts?
Japanese car catalogs use metric horsepower (PS), where 1 PS = 735.5 W = about 0.7355 kW. For example, 100 PS is about 73.5 kW and 200 PS is about 147 kW. English-speaking countries use horsepower (HP), where 1 HP = about 745.7 W, slightly larger, so even the same “horsepower” differs by about 1.4%. Recent Japanese catalogs mainly list kW with PS in parentheses, so when comparing with overseas figures, check whether the unit is PS or HP.
What speed in km/h is a pace of 5 minutes per km?
Running 1 km in 5 minutes is 12 km/h. Pace and speed are inversely proportional, and you can calculate km/h = 60 ÷ (minutes per km). A 6-minute pace is 10 km/h and a 4-minute pace is 15 km/h. In the “Speed” category of this tool you can choose “Pace (min/km)” as a unit, and the result is also shown in the form “5 min 00 s/km.” That way you will not wonder whether a decimal 5.5 minutes is 5:30 or 5:50. A sub-4-hour full marathon is roughly a pace of 5:41 per km.
Can I change the number of decimal places in the result?
Yes. The default is “Auto,” which shows only meaningful digits up to 6 significant figures. If you want aligned digits, as when writing documents, choose from 0 to 6 decimal places. You can also turn the comma separator for every three digits on or off. Since shakkanho units are defined as fractions that do not divide evenly (1 tsubo = 400/121 ㎡, etc.), the displayed values are inevitably rounded. The formulas themselves can be seen under “Formulas behind the conversion” at the bottom of the screen.
Can I quickly recall conversions I use often?
If you press “Save to history,” the latest 8 are stored on your device, and next time you can redo the same conversion with a single tap. The page URL also contains the chosen category, units and value, so bookmarking it lets you fix a state such as “open tsubo → ㎡ with 30 tsubo.” If you share it in a chat, the other person can start from the same screen. Saved data stays only in this device’s browser and is never sent to a server.
