Word Cloud Generator | Paste Survey Comments or Any Text to Count the Most Frequent Words and Turn Them Into an Image — Heart, Star and Custom Shapes, Vertical Words, Transparent PNG and SVG, Stop Words, Merged Spellings and a CSV Word Frequency Table
The Word Cloud Generator is a free tool that turns text into a word cloud — an image where words that appear more often are drawn larger — entirely in your browser. Paste open-ended survey responses, course or workshop feedback, meeting notes, reviews or social media posts. Common words such as the, and, of and it are removed automatically, and you can add your own words to exclude, phrases to count as one word, and spellings to merge (colour = color). Turn on “count once per line” to count how many respondents used each word rather than how many times it appears. It handles English, Japanese, Chinese and Korean: Japanese nouns and adjectives are extracted without spaces, Korean particles are stripped. Pick a rectangle, circle, heart, star, cloud or diamond, or upload a silhouette image to fill any shape. Mix horizontal and vertical words (CJK words are set in true vertical writing), choose from 8 palettes, a transparent or custom background, sans-serif, serif or rounded fonts, the size contrast and the number of words. Save as PNG (including 2× high resolution) or SVG, or copy the image. The frequency table with counts and percentages can be copied straight into Excel or saved as CSV. You can also paste a ready-made list of words and counts.

PNG is 1600×900px (double for high-res). SVG keeps the words as text, so a font missing on the device that opens it is replaced by another font.

Good to know
- English, Chinese and Korean text is split into words with your browser’s built-in word segmentation (Intl.Segmenter). Possessive ’s is removed, and with “Combine upper and lower case” on, AI and ai count as the same word (shown in the most common spelling).
- Japanese has no spaces between words, so runs of kanji, katakana and Latin letters are counted as words (グループワーク, 顧客満足度), and adjectives such as 楽しかった are counted in their dictionary form 楽しい. Verbs are not counted.
- Korean particles are stripped (학교에서 → 학교) and predicates such as 했다 or 좋아요 are not counted.
- “Remove common words” drops words that appear in almost any text: the, and, of, it in English, 的 and 了 in Chinese, こと and 私 in Japanese, and so on.
- With “Count once per line (response)” on, a word used several times by the same person counts once, so the size shows how many respondents used it.
- Word size comes from the count. Under “Count to size”, choose square root (normal), proportional (bigger differences) or logarithmic (gentler). The most frequent word is the largest and is placed near the centre.
- Words are placed from largest to smallest, each searching outwards from the centre in a spiral for free space. Words that do not fit are marked “Did not fit” in the table — reduce the number of words or the size contrast to fit them all.
- SVG keeps the words as editable text, so you can adjust it later in Illustrator or similar. If the device opening it lacks the same font, another font is substituted and words may overlap, so use PNG if you just want the image.
- Your text and images are processed only in this browser and are never sent to a server. Your text and settings are saved on this device (images used for shapes are not saved).

FAQ
- What is a word cloud?
- A word cloud is a picture of the words in a text where the more often a word appears, the larger it is drawn. It is a quick way to show which words dominate text that would take a long time to read one by one, such as open-ended survey answers or feedback. Size represents frequency; position and direction have no meaning.
- How do I make a word cloud from open-ended survey responses?
- Copy the free-text column from Excel, Google Forms or your survey tool and paste it into “Enter your words”. Each line is one response, so turn on “Count once per line (response)” to size words by the number of people who used them. Exclude words that are just the topic itself (such as “workshop” or “survey”) with the “Exclude” button in the table to make the content stand out.
- Why do words like “the” and “and” not appear?
- “Remove common words” is on by default and drops function words that appear in almost any text (the, and, of, to, it, is and so on), so that meaningful words stand out. Turn it off if you want to count every word.
- Can I make a heart-shaped or custom-shaped word cloud?
- Yes. Under “Shape”, choose circle, heart, star, cloud or diamond, or choose “Image shape” and upload a silhouette image (a dark shape on a white or transparent background) to place the words inside that shape. Turn on “Invert” to fill the white area instead.
- Can I put words vertically?
- Yes. Set “Word direction” to “Mix horizontal and vertical” or “Vertical only”. English words are rotated 90°, while Japanese, Chinese and Korean words are set in true vertical writing, one character above the next. Turn off the vertical writing switch to rotate CJK words instead.
- Can I get a transparent background or an image for PowerPoint?
- Choose “Transparent (PNG)” under “Background” and save as PNG to get an image with a transparent background that you can place on slides or flyers. For slides, use the 16:9 aspect ratio, and for printing save the “High-res PNG (2×)”.
- Can I use the word counts in Excel?
- “Copy table” in “Most frequent words” copies rank, word, count and percentage as tab-separated text that pastes straight into Excel or Google Sheets. “Save CSV” saves a UTF-8 file with a BOM so that Excel opens it without garbled characters.
- Is my text sent anywhere?
- No. Word segmentation, counting and drawing all happen in your browser, so you can use it for internal surveys or personal feedback that must not leave your computer.
