Japan Post Postage Calculator | How Many A4 Sheets for ¥110? Stamps for Nagagata 3 & Kaku 2, Teikeigai Within/Over Limits, and Stamp Combinations

The Postage Calculator is a free tool that tells you how much in stamps to put on a letter, based on the envelope and its contents. Choose an envelope such as Nagagata 3, Nagagata 4, Yō-nagagata 3, Kaku 2, Kaku A4, Kaku 3 or Kaku 0, then the number of A4 or B5 copy-paper sheets, how they are folded (such as in three) and whether there is a clear file folder. It estimates the weight and thickness, decides between teikei (standard-size mail) and teikeigai (non-standard mail, within limits / oversize), and shows the postage and how many more sheets until the next rate. It adds the surcharge for sokutatsu (express), tokutei kiroku (tracked), kan’i kakitome (simple registered) and ippan kakitome (registered), and compares with Smart Letter and Letter Pack Light/Plus to show the cheapest way to send and the cheapest with tracking. It includes a table of how many A4 sheets each envelope can hold at ¥110, ¥140 and ¥180, stamp combinations that make the postage exactly or with the least overpayment using the stamps you have (including old-rate ¥84, ¥63 and ¥94 stamps), the difference for old-rate stamps and postcards, and the rate table revised in October 2024 (still the same as of October 2026).

ABOUT

About Japan Post Postage Calculator | How Many A4 Sheets for ¥110? Stamps for Nagagata 3 & Kaku 2, Teikeigai Within/Over Limits, and Stamp Combinations

The postage and stamp-combination calculator works out “how many yen of stamps to put on” from the envelope and its contents. Choose an envelope such as Nagagata 3, Nagagata 4, Yō-nagagata 3, Kaku 2, Kaku A4, Kaku 3 or Kaku 0, the number of A4 or B5 copy-paper sheets, the folding (such as in three) and whether there is a clear file folder; it estimates weight and thickness, decides between teikei (standard-size mail) and teikeigai (non-standard mail, within limits / oversize), and shows the postage. A4 copy paper (64 g/m²) weighs about 4 g per sheet, so in a Nagagata 3 folded in three, up to 11 sheets cost ¥110 and 12–23 sheets cost ¥180. A Kaku 2 envelope weighs about 15 g by itself; with A4 unfolded, up to 8 sheets cost ¥140 and 9–21 sheets cost ¥180. You can also check how many grams or sheets remain before the next rate, the postage with sokutatsu (express), tokutei kiroku (tracked) or kan’i kakitome (simple registered), comparisons with Smart Letter and Letter Pack, combinations of your ¥84 and ¥63 stamps to make up the postage, the difference for old-rate stamps, and the rate table (revised October 2024, and still the same as of October 2026).

Great for

  • Want to know how many yen of stamps to put on a Kaku 2 envelope containing a résumé or application documents
  • Want to know how many A4 sheets fit in a Nagagata 3 envelope for an invoice or contract at ¥110
  • Want to find out whether an envelope is teikeigai within limits or oversize (Kaku 0 or a thick envelope)
  • Want to combine leftover old-rate ¥84, ¥63 and ¥94 stamps to cover today’s postage
  • Want to compare tokutei kiroku, kan’i kakitome and Letter Pack Light to see which is the cheapest way to get tracking
  • Have no scale and want to estimate the weight of an envelope from the number of sheets

Good to know

  • The rates are Japan Post’s rates revised on October 1, 2024. The October 1, 2026 revision applies to Yu-Pack, Yu-Packet and Click Post; the rates for letters, postcards, Letter Pack and Smart Letter have not changed.
  • Weight limits are “up to and including”. Exactly 50 g is teikei (¥110), while 50.1 g falls under the teikeigai (within limits) up-to-100 g rate (¥180). Even an envelope of teikei size becomes teikeigai if it is over 50 g or 1 cm thick.
  • Paper weight is basis weight (g/m²) × area, so A4 copy paper (64 g/m²) is about 4.0 g. Envelope weights (about 5 g for Nagagata 3, about 15 g for Kaku 2, etc.) and a clear file folder (about 20 g) are typical values and vary with paper thickness and windows.
  • Thickness is estimated as paper thickness × number of sheets × layers after folding + the envelope. Folds and trapped air make it swell, so measure with a ruler when it is close to the 1 cm teikei limit or the 3 cm within-limits limit.
  • For stamp combinations, it looks for the combination with the least overpayment (and the fewest stamps if tied) without exceeding the number of stamps you have, and the combination with the fewest stamps when you allow overpayment up to a set amount.
  • All calculation is done in your browser, and nothing you enter is sent to a server.

FAQ

How many A4 sheets can I send for ¥110?
If you fold copy paper (64 g/m², about 4 g per sheet) in three and put it in a Nagagata 3 envelope (about 5 g), up to 11 sheets (about 49 g) go as teikei at ¥110. 12–23 sheets fall under the teikeigai (within limits) up-to-100 g rate of ¥180. With thicker wood-free paper (81.4 g/m²), up to 8 sheets cost ¥110.
How much is the postage for A4 in a Kaku 2 envelope?
A Kaku 2 envelope (240×332 mm) is teikeigai (within limits), so the cheapest is ¥140. Because the envelope alone is about 15 g, unfolded A4 copy paper costs ¥140 up to 8 sheets (about 47 g), ¥180 for 9–21 sheets and ¥270 for 22–33 sheets. If you put them in a clear file folder (about 20 g), only up to 3 sheets stay at ¥140.
What is the difference between teikeigai within limits and oversize?
It is within limits if it is up to 34 cm long side, 25 cm short side, 3 cm thick and 1 kg; beyond that, up to 60 cm long side, 90 cm total of three sides and 4 kg is oversize. For up to 50 g the rate is ¥140 within limits and ¥260 oversize, so oversize costs about ¥120 more for the same weight. Kaku 0 (287×382 mm) and Kaku 1 envelopes have a long side over 34 cm, so they are oversize even when light.
How can I use an ¥84 stamp on a ¥110 letter?
Add stamps for the ¥26 difference. With ¥1, ¥2, ¥5, ¥10, ¥20 and ¥50 stamps, the fewest is three stamps: ¥20 + ¥5 + ¥1. For a ¥63 postcard add ¥22 (¥20 + ¥2), and for a ¥94 stamp add ¥16 (¥10 + ¥5 + ¥1).
Which is cheaper, tokutei kiroku or Letter Pack Light?
Teikei mail (¥110) plus tokutei kiroku (¥210) is ¥320, which is ¥110 cheaper than Letter Pack Light (¥430). Even teikeigai within limits up to 100 g (¥180) is ¥390 with tokutei kiroku. Over 150 g, ¥270 + ¥210 = ¥480, and Letter Pack Light is cheaper.
Can a letter of exactly 50 g go as teikei?
Yes. The weight category is “up to 50 g”, so exactly 50 g is ¥110. However, glue, tape, stamps and scale error can push it over, so once you are within 3 g of the limit, it is safer to remove a sheet or put on stamps for the next rate (¥180).
What happens if the postage is insufficient?
If the sender’s address is written, a notice of the shortfall is attached and the mail goes back to the sender. If the sender is unknown, the recipient has to pay the shortfall to receive it. For application documents or invoices this causes trouble for the other party, so when close to a limit it is safest to have it weighed at a post office counter.
How many stamps can I put on?
There is no limit on the number, but place them where they do not cover the address or postal code. On a portrait envelope cluster them in the upper left, and on a landscape envelope in the upper right. If you enter a maximum number of stamps, it looks for a combination within that number that reaches the postage.
