About Childcare Leave Pay Calculator (育児休業給付金 & Maternity Allowance) | How Much and What Share of Take-Home
The childcare leave pay calculator works out the money you can receive during maternity and childcare leave, from your monthly pay before leave, your due date and how long you will take childcare leave. During maternity leave, health insurance pays the maternity allowance (出産手当金: daily amount = standard monthly remuneration ÷ 30 × 2/3, normally for 98 days). During childcare leave, employment insurance pays the childcare leave benefit (育児休業給付金: 67% of the daily wage at the start of leave, and 50% from day 181). From April 2025, if both parents take 14 or more days of childcare leave, a post-birth leave support benefit (出生後休業支援給付金: 13%) for up to 28 days is added, and together with the tax exemption and social insurance exemption this comes to about 100% of take-home pay. It supports both mothers (maternity leave followed by childcare leave) and fathers (childcare leave only), and also shows the exempted social insurance premiums and a comparison with your take-home pay before leave.

Good to know
- One month of the childcare leave benefit is the daily wage at the start of leave (wages for the 6 months before leave ÷ 180) × 30 days × 67%. The 67% rate applies up to 180 days of benefit in total; after that it is 50%. For mothers, the maternity leave period does not count toward the 180 days.
- The daily wage at the start of leave has an upper limit (15,690 yen) and a lower limit (3,014 yen). The upper limit for one month is 315,369 yen at 67% and 235,350 yen at 50%. These are the amounts in effect from August 1, 2025, and they are revised every year on August 1.
- The daily maternity allowance is the average standard monthly remuneration over the 12 months up to the start date ÷ 30 (rounded to the nearest 10 yen) × 2/3 (rounded to the nearest yen). The period runs from 42 days before the due date (98 days for multiple births) to 56 days after the birth, and days when the baby is born later than the due date are also paid. In principle there is no such benefit under National Health Insurance.
- The post-birth leave support benefit is paid for up to 28 days (daily wage at the start of leave × 13%) if each parent takes at least 14 days of childcare leave in total, within 8 weeks after birth for fathers, or within 8 weeks after postnatal leave for mothers. If your spouse is a stay-at-home parent, self-employed, a freelancer, or you are a single parent, your spouse does not need to take leave.
- During maternity and childcare leave, health insurance, nursing care insurance and employees' pension premiums are exempted for both the employee and the employer, and the exempted period still counts as paid for your future pension. A month counts if you are on leave at the end of that month, and leave that starts and ends within the same month counts if it is 14 days or more.
- The childcare leave benefit, the maternity allowance and the post-birth leave support benefit are all tax-free. However, resident tax is based on the previous year's income, so you keep paying it during leave.
- Everything you enter is calculated in your browser and is not sent to a server.

FAQ
- How much childcare leave benefit do I get with a monthly pay of 300,000 yen?
- If your monthly pay for the 6 months before leave was 300,000 yen each month, the daily wage at the start of leave is 10,000 yen, and the childcare leave benefit is 201,000 yen per month for the first 6 months (180 days) and 150,000 yen per month from month 7. If a mother takes childcare leave after maternity leave until the child turns 1, the total childcare leave benefit is about 1.82 million yen, and she receives a separate maternity allowance of about 650,000 yen (6,667 yen a day × 98 days = 653,366 yen).
- What share of my take-home pay do I get during childcare leave?
- The childcare leave benefit is tax-free and social insurance premiums are exempted during leave, so even 67% of gross pay is about 80% of your pre-leave take-home pay. For example, with a monthly pay of 300,000 yen (Kyokai Kenpo in Tokyo, no dependents), take-home pay before leave is about 239,000 yen, and a 67% month pays 201,000 yen (about 84%). In the period with the 13% top-up from the post-birth leave support benefit, it is 80% of gross, which is almost the same as take-home pay (about 99%).
- What is the post-birth leave support benefit, and how much is it?
- It is a benefit that started in April 2025. If both parents each take 14 or more days of childcare leave right after birth (within 8 weeks after birth for fathers, within 8 weeks after postnatal leave for mothers), 13% of the daily wage at the start of leave is added to the childcare leave benefit for up to 28 days. With a monthly pay of 300,000 yen, 28 days comes to 36,400 yen, and the upper limit is 57,111 yen. If your spouse is not a company employee or you are a single parent, you qualify by taking 14 or more days yourself.
- How much do I get if the father takes one month of childcare leave?
- If a father with a monthly pay of 300,000 yen takes 28 days of childcare leave from the birth date, the childcare leave benefit (including postnatal paternity leave) is 187,600 yen, and if the mother also takes leave, the post-birth leave support benefit adds 36,400 yen, for a total of 224,000 yen. If the leave spans the end of a month, that month's social insurance premium (about 42,000 yen at a monthly pay of 300,000 yen) is also exempted. Leave that starts and ends within the same month qualifies for the exemption if it is 14 days or more.
- How much is the maternity allowance?
- The daily amount is the standard monthly remuneration ÷ 30 (rounded to the nearest 10 yen) × 2/3. With a monthly pay of 300,000 yen (standard monthly remuneration of 300,000 yen), the daily amount is 6,667 yen, and if the baby is born on the due date it covers 98 days (42 before and 56 after birth), or 653,366 yen. If the baby is born 5 days late, it covers 103 days, including those 5 days. It is a benefit of your employer's health insurance (Kyokai Kenpo or a health insurance society) and in principle does not exist under National Health Insurance.
- What is the upper limit of the childcare leave benefit?
- From August 1, 2025, the upper limit of the daily wage at the start of leave is 15,690 yen, so the upper limit for one month is 315,369 yen in the 67% period and 235,350 yen in the 50% period. If your monthly pay before leave exceeds about 470,000 yen, the benefit does not increase however high your pay is. The lower limit for one month is 60,581 yen at 67% and 45,210 yen at 50%.
- When is the childcare leave benefit paid?
- It is calculated for each one-month payment unit period starting from the first day of leave, and normally you apply through your employer for two months at a time. Payment arrives about a week after the benefit is approved, so for mothers the first payment often comes 4 to 5 months after the birth. The maternity allowance during maternity leave is generally applied for after postnatal leave ends.
- Can I still get the benefit if I extend leave to 1 year 6 months or age 2?
- If you have a reason such as having applied for daycare but not getting in, you can extend childcare leave to 1 year 6 months, and then to age 2, and receive the childcare leave benefit. The extended period is paid at 50%. Since April 2025, it is also checked whether the daycare application was made in order to return to work promptly.
- How much social insurance premium is exempted during childcare leave?
- During maternity and childcare leave, health insurance, nursing care insurance and employees' pension premiums are exempted. With a monthly pay of 300,000 yen (Kyokai Kenpo in Tokyo, under 40), your share is 42,315 yen a month, and a mother who stays on leave from maternity leave until the child turns 1 has 13 to 14 months exempted, roughly 550,000 to 590,000 yen. The exempted period is treated as paid, so your future pension is not reduced.
