Maze Generator | Make Free Printable A4 Mazes — Circular (Round) Mazes, Heart, Star and Diamond Shapes, Easy Mazes for Toddlers to Very Hard Mazes for Adults, with Answer Pages and an On-Screen Mode You Trace with Your Finger
The Maze Generator is a free tool that creates mazes automatically and prints them. There are five shapes — square, circular (a round maze made of concentric rings), heart, star and diamond — and sizes from a 5×5 maze for 3–4-year-olds to a 50×50 maze for adults. Turning up “twistiness” gives long winding corridors like the recursive-backtracker (depth-first) algorithm; turning it down gives many short dead ends like Prim's algorithm, and adding loops makes harder mazes with more than one route. It draws the solution path in red and shows the length of the solution and the number of dead ends and junctions. Print one or two mazes per A4 page, up to 20 at once, with a name line and answer pages; save as PNG or SVG; share the same maze by URL or number; and play on a phone or tablet by tracing the path with your finger, with a timer and step count. Everything runs in your browser.

ABOUT
About Maze Generator | Make Free Printable A4 Mazes — Circular (Round) Mazes, Heart, Star and Diamond Shapes, Easy Mazes for Toddlers to Very Hard Mazes for Adults, with Answer Pages and an On-Screen Mode You Trace with Your Finger
The Maze Generator is a free tool that creates a maze from the shape and size you choose and prints it on A4. Besides square mazes it makes circular (concentric), heart, star and diamond mazes, from easy mazes for 3–4-year-olds to 50×50 mazes for adults. “Twistiness” chooses between long winding corridors and many short branches, and you can also add loops and pick where the goal is. It shows the solution and the number of dead ends and junctions, prints up to 20 mazes at once with a name line and answer pages, saves PNG or SVG, and lets you solve the maze on screen with your finger.
How to use Maze Generator | Make Free Printable A4 Mazes — Circular (Round) Mazes, Heart, Star and Diamond Shapes, Easy Mazes for Toddlers to Very Hard Mazes for Adults, with Answer Pages and an On-Screen Mode You Trace with Your Finger
- 1In “Maze shape and size”, choose square, circular, heart, star or diamond
- 2Pick a level from “Easy” to “Extreme”, or set the number of cells (rings for a circular maze) and the twistiness yourself
- 3If you like, choose how many loops to add and where the goal is (the exit or centre, or the farthest cell)
- 4Check the maze; press “Make another maze” to regenerate it and “Show answer” to see the solution
- 5In “Print on A4”, set the heading, number of mazes, mazes per page, name line and answer pages, then press “Print” (at 100% scale)
- 6Save as PNG or SVG for an image, or open “Play on screen” to trace the path to the goal with your finger
Great for
- Prepare easy maze worksheets for 3–4-year-olds at home or nursery as pencil-control practice
- Print a stack of mazes with answers for primary-school study time, after-school clubs or rainy days
- Make very hard 50×50 mazes or mazes with loops as a brain teaser for adults
- Add a heart, star or circular maze to a Valentine's or birthday card or a kids' corner in a shop
- Paste a maze image (PNG or SVG) into a class newsletter, PTA flyer or event activity sheet
- Solve mazes on your phone with your finger while waiting, and compete on time and steps
- See the difference between the recursive-backtracker and Prim's algorithms when learning programming
Good to know
- Every maze this tool makes can be solved from start to goal. With loops set to “None” it is a perfect maze: there is exactly one way to reach each cell, so there is only one solution.
- Twistiness is the share of steps that carve on from the newest cell (recursive backtracker / depth-first) rather than from a random carved cell (Prim's algorithm). Near 100% you get long winding corridors; near 0% you get lots of short dead ends.
- People usually find mazes with long winding corridors harder, because a wrong turn is noticed late. Mazes with many dead ends look busy, but short dead ends are easy to rule out.
- Adding loops creates more than one route, and some areas can no longer be solved by keeping one hand on the wall (the wall-follower rule). This suits hard mazes for adults.
- Circular mazes split the outer rings into more cells (a ring is split when a cell becomes about twice as wide as the ring is deep). The start is at the top of the outer ring and the goal is in the centre.
- Heart, star and diamond mazes use only the cells of a square grid that fall inside the shape. The start is the top cell and the goal is the bottom cell (or the farthest cell).
- The same maze number and settings always give the same maze. Send the link from “Copy this maze's URL” and others can open the same maze.
- The age guides (3–4 years, 5–6 years and so on) are rough. For children new to mazes, set the lines to “Bold” and print one maze per page so the path is easy to trace.
- Mazes are created entirely in your browser; neither the mazes nor the settings are sent to a server, and settings are stored only on this device. You are free to use the printed sheets at home, in class or at events.

FAQ
- What size maze suits a 3–4-year-old?
- Start with about 5×5 cells, then move to 8–10 cells square once they are used to it. In this tool “Easy” is 5×5 and “Normal” is 9×9. Set the lines to “Bold” and print one large maze per page so the path is easy to trace with a pencil or crayon.
- Can I print mazes with the answers?
- Yes. Turn on “Add answer pages” and, after the maze pages, it prints the same layout again with the solution drawn as a red line. If you set two or more mazes, it makes different mazes and adds their answers in the same order.
- How do I make a circular (round) maze?
- Choose “Circular” as the shape and set the number of rings. The tool divides concentric rings into cells and makes a maze you enter at the top of the outer ring and solve to the goal in the centre. Outer rings are split into more cells so all the cells are a similar size and easy to follow.
- How do I make a maze harder?
- Combine more cells (30–50 square), twistiness of 70% or more for long corridors, loops set to “Some” or “Many” so there is more than one route, and the goal set to the farthest cell for a long solution. “Extreme” sets these together.
- Which maze generation algorithm does it use?
- It uses the growing tree algorithm. Choosing the newest cell to carve from gives the recursive backtracker (depth-first search) and choosing a random cell gives the same mazes as Prim's algorithm; the twistiness setting mixes the two. Loops are made by joining some dead ends to a neighbouring cell, and the solution is the shortest path found by breadth-first search.
- Can I play on a phone?
- In “Play on screen”, trace the passage from the green dot with your finger. Trace back over your path to go back. When you reach the goal it shows the time, your steps and the steps on the shortest route. On a computer you can also use the arrow keys or W, A, S, D.
- Can I hand out the mazes or use them in newsletters?
- Yes — use the printed sheets and saved images freely at home, at school or nursery, in clubs and at events. To let someone else open the same maze, share the URL or the maze number.
